Every drop of blood carries the power to save a life. Guided by its commitment to human health, compassion, and social responsibility, Jose Rizal University (JRU), in partnership with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), successfully conducted “Pusong Rizaliano: Dugo’y Alay sa Serbisyo” on March 14, 2025, at the JRU Old Auditorium. This lifesaving initiative brought the Rizalian community together to support accessible healthcare services and contribute to a sustainable blood supply for patients in need.
The activity mobilized 127 blood donors from JRU’s employees and students, alongside 43 student volunteers, including 12 nursing students who assisted with initial health interviews and physical assessments such as blood pressure monitoring, weight, body temperature, and height measurements. Their participation strengthened health awareness, practical healthcare competencies, and the spirit of volunteerism.
Beyond encouraging blood donation, the initiative addressed a critical public health need. Safe and accessible blood supplies are essential for treating severe injuries, managing childbirth-related complications among women, and supporting patients undergoing major surgical procedures, including those involving the heart and cardiovascular system. Blood transfusions may also be necessary during complex treatments for coronary artery disease, blood disorders, and other life-threatening conditions.
This initiative directly advances United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), particularly Target 3.8, which promotes universal health coverage and access to quality essential healthcare services, and Target 3.1, which seeks to reduce maternal mortality. By supporting the availability of safe blood for medical emergencies, surgical interventions, and maternal healthcare, JRU contributes to strengthening the healthcare system and improving access to potentially lifesaving treatment.
Moreover, the partnership reinforces SDG Target 3.c by providing nursing students with opportunities to develop practical healthcare skills and gain experience in community-based health initiatives, supporting their preparation as future healthcare professionals.
Through Pusong Rizaliano, JRU demonstrates that advancing SDG 3 extends beyond health education—it requires meaningful action, community participation, and sustainable partnerships. By transforming volunteerism into lifesaving service, the University helps build a healthier, more compassionate, and resilient society where every life matters.
