Why I Chose Law School: A Personal Mission to Fight Injustice

  • August 23, 2025
Q: Why did you choose to attend law school?

Sandra: From a young age, I have aspired to become a lawyer, driven not by idealized notions or fictional figures, but by my own personal experiences. Growing up, I encountered hardships that no child should face, including abuse that left me feeling voiceless. It was during these difficult times that I came to understand the crucial importance of having a voice capable of standing up against injustice. These experiences fueled a profound desire to pursue justice, not only for myself but also for others who have endured similar struggles. My goal is to become the kind of lawyer who advocates for those who cannot defend themselves, providing a voice for the silenced and marginalized. For me, the pursuit of law is not merely a career ambition; it is a deeply personal mission driven by a commitment to justice.

Aguilar, Sandra Marie T.
Q: What challenges have you encountered during your study of law, and how did you overcome it?

Sandra: The most significant challenge I faced while studying law was balancing my academic responsibilities, work commitments, and personal life, all while maintaining my physical and mental health. To manage this, I implemented a structured schedule, allocating six hours for studying after work on weekdays and eight hours on weekends. I also prioritized self-care by incorporating regular exercise, healthy eating habits, and taking vitamins into my daily routine. To ensure I remained on track, I scheduled social activities in advance. By staying organized and deliberate with my time, I was able to maintain control over my commitments and reduce stress.

Q: In what ways has JRU supported and enhanced your law education?

Sandra: JRU Law is highly inclusive, offering opportunities for all individuals who wish to pursue a legal education, with no entrance exams or specific grade requirements. The university only requests basic enrollment documentation, ensuring accessibility for students from diverse backgrounds. This approach has allowed me to pursue my passion for law without facing unnecessary obstacles.

Moreover, JRU is recognized for its affordable enrollment fees, enabling me to obtain a quality legal education without the financial strain that many students encounter. The institution’s commitment to providing accessible education has played a crucial role in my ability to continue my studies.

In the event of failing a subject, JRU provides the opportunity to retake it, allowing students to learn from their mistakes and progress toward their goals. One of my professors once advised, “Don’t let failed subjects affect you; use them as motivation to try again and give your best.” This advice has remained with me, serving as a reminder that setbacks are part of the journey and provide an opportunity for growth and resilience. Overall, JRU has provided me with the support and encouragement I need to pursue law, making it possible for me to overcome challenges and stay focused on my goals.

Q: What tips or advice would you offer to aspiring law students?

Sandra: Advancing your reading during semester breaks can be helpful. It gives you the chance to understand complex topics more and reduce stress during the regular semester. Using this time to review or even prepare for upcoming lessons allows you to manage your workload more effectively when classes resume. It also provides extra time to grasp difficult concepts without the pressure of deadlines.
