The Real Talk: Kim’s Journey at Law School

  • November 3, 2025

Law school in the Philippines is not just about studying the law, nor is it about having money; it’s about how you handle challenges and navigate complex situations.

As a future lawyer, a person’s life and their pursuit of justice may depend on you. When I was in high school, I used to believe that everything I saw with my own eyes reflected the truth. However, one of my teachers opened my mind to a deeper reality: not everything visible in public is genuine, and there are always two sides to every story. This revelation sparked my curiosity, leading me to research and uncover instances of human rights violations, unserved justice, and countless individuals silenced by fear—many of whom belong to marginalized sectors.

These people need help; they deserve justice and the chance to fight for their rights. I am fully aware that studying law is both expensive and challenging. Yet, I am driven by the thought that someone out there may need my help one day. It is this purpose that inspires me to persevere in my pursuit of a law degree.

Q: What challenges have you encountered during your study of law, and how have you overcome them?

Studying law has presented numerous challenges, particularly in managing time and coping with disappointments, including failing grades. Initially, I believed that entering law school would be straightforward—that I could handle my subjects effortlessly and pass them without difficulty. However, I quickly realized that this was not the case. Over time, I learned to approach my studies with better time management, allotting sufficient time for each subject without neglecting others. I began organizing my schedule meticulously, ensuring balance and focus across all areas of study.

When it comes to failures, I now view them as opportunities for growth and self-improvement. Each setback serves as a reminder that there is always room to enhance my skills and knowledge. I hold on to the belief that these failures, combined with determination and hard work, will eventually lead to significant achievements.

Q: In what ways has JRU supported and enhanced your law education?

José Rizal University supports its students not only in academics but also through various extracurricular activities. The institution provides a high standard of education, enabling students to gain valuable knowledge and skills. JRU creates opportunities for students to develop and hone their expertise in legal education. Through programs such as Moot Court, students are encouraged to apply their learning, sharpen their legal acumen, and prepare for future careers in the field of law.

Q: What tips or advice would you offer to aspiring law students?

Take one step at a time—there’s no need to rush. Avoid putting unnecessary pressure on yourself. If you complete your tasks on time, that’s great. If not, don’t be too hard on yourself; everything unfolds at the right moment for you. If you face setbacks, it’s okay to pause, take a break, and reevaluate your next steps. Remember, failures don’t define you as a student—they’re simply reminders that there’s always room to grow and improve. Keep in mind why you embarked on this journey in law school, and let that purpose guide and motivate you forward.
