José Rizal University celebrated its first-ever Chinese New Year.
With the theme “2025 Year of the Snake: Slithering Prosperity, Welcoming Diversity,” this remarkable event was headed by the Rizalian International Students Association (RISA), a newly recognized student organization dedicated to representing and supporting the university’s growing community of international students. This event marked an important step in JRU’s continuous efforts to foster a learning environment that respects and celebrates cultural diversity. With students from various backgrounds enriching the university’s community, the Chinese New Year celebration became a meaningful occasion to pave the way for deeper cultural understanding, appreciation, and inclusivity—particularly for the Chinese students who call JRU their second home.
The festivities began with an energetic lion dance procession, which started at the Tower Building and made its way to the Upper Quadrangle. The rhythmic beat of the drums and the lively movements of the lion dancers symbolized good fortune, prosperity, and the warding off of negative energy for the year ahead. As the program officially commenced, the event organizers took the opportunity to educate participants on traditional Chinese beliefs, explaining the significance of zodiac signs, the meaning behind the red envelopes (ampao), and even received fortunes for the day. One of the most delightful moments came when all the participants received a charming souvenir, with a mini ampao containing a fortune attached. This thoughtful token added an element of surprise and joy, making the experience even more memorable.
The event also featured an insightful talk by Mr. Frank, a distinguished Chinese speaker, who delved into the significance of Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival. He explained how the celebration symbolizes renewal, unity, and the beginning of a prosperous year. His words provided participants with a deeper appreciation of the holiday’s cultural and historical importance, enriching their understanding of its traditions.
The celebration continued with captivating performances by the JRU Dance Troupe and JRU Chorale. These performances embodied the lively spirit of Chinese New Year, filled with music and dance. Adding to the excitement, six students won the First Fortune Gift, while two others received the Second Fortune Gift, further elevating the festive mood. The fun continued with three interactive games, fostering camaraderie and keeping the energy high throughout the event.
As the event neared its end, a unique and memorable moment occurred. Organizers pulled a string attached to a snake’s mouth located on the second floor, mimicking the sound of fireworks—a fitting tribute to one of the most beloved aspects of the Chinese New Year celebrations. The sound of the “fireworks” resonated through the air, symbolizing the joy, prosperity, and excitement that the New Year brings.
This year’s celebration at JRU was more than just a cultural event, it was an immersive experience that united students in the spirit of tradition, learning, and joy. It served as a powerful reminder that, no matter where they came from, traditions have the ability to connect people and create lasting memories. As the festivities came to a close, the beaming faces of students reflected the event’s success, proving once again that JRU is a place where cultures thrive and traditions are embraced. With fortunes in hand and smiles on their faces, participants left with a renewed appreciation for the beauty of traditions and the bonds that bring us all together.
May this new year bring everyone good fortune, happiness, and success! Gong Xi Fa Cai!
