Behind every scholarship is a dream waiting to be fulfilled, a family hoping for a better future, and a student determined to overcome poverty. At José Rizal University (JRU), education is more than an academic pursuit—it is a powerful pathway toward opportunity, empowerment, and economic mobility. Guided by its commitment to inclusive and equitable quality education, the University continues to open doors for deserving students from poor and low-income families, ensuring that limited economic resources do not prevent them from pursuing their dreams.
This commitment is reflected in the University’s PD 451 Scholarship Program, which supported 35 scholars in School Year 2024–2025 and increased to 36 scholars in School Year 2025–2026, representing a 2.86% growth in beneficiaries. More importantly, six scholars successfully earned their college degrees in June 2026, accounting for 16.67% of the scholarship recipients. The remaining 30 scholars, representing 83.33%, continue their academic journey across the first to third year levels. These achievements reflect meaningful educational outcomes, demonstrating how sustained financial assistance helps students remain in school and move closer to achieving their aspirations.
JRU’s commitment extends beyond the PD 451 Scholarship. Through its Student Assistance Program, 12 financially disadvantaged students received support to help ease the burden of educational expenses. The University also strengthened its partnerships with compassionate benefactors who share its vision of making education accessible. Through the generosity of the Del Fonso Family and Dr. P. Zerillo, seven students benefited from the E. Del Fonso Memorial Scholarship, while four received the Zerillo Scholarship. Together, these initiatives provided 59 scholarship and financial assistance grants in School Year 2025–2026, creating opportunities for students facing economic hardship to continue pursuing their education.
The significance of these programs goes beyond the number of beneficiaries. For students struggling with financial difficulties, a scholarship can mean the difference between continuing their education and putting their dreams on hold. For their families, it offers hope for greater economic security. For the University, every student who progresses toward graduation represents a meaningful step toward building a more educated, empowered, and productive society.
These efforts strongly support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), by reducing financial barriers that contribute to educational inequality; SDG 4 (Quality Education), by expanding access to inclusive educational opportunities; SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), by preparing students for future employment and sustainable livelihoods; and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), by fostering meaningful collaborations with individuals and organizations committed to educational empowerment.
The true value of a scholarship is not measured solely by the financial assistance provided, but by the opportunities it creates and the futures it helps shape.
Through its continuing scholarship initiatives, José Rizal University reaffirms its belief that poverty should never define a student’s potential. By investing in education, nurturing aspirations, and strengthening partnerships, JRU continues to help transform challenges into opportunities and dreams into achievements.
At JRU, every scholar supported is a future empowered, every graduate is a milestone achieved, and every opportunity created is a step toward breaking the cycle of poverty.
