On July 23, heavy rains caused by Super Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon affected Metro Manila and the northern provinces, leading to a situation similar to the Ondoy disaster. Many areas lost power, had limited water supply, and disrupted communication. Consequently, schools, offices, and businesses were closed, and transportation stopped. However, the Filipino spirit of volunteerism and resilience emerged as volunteers used rubber and makeshift boats to rescue people whose homes were almost submerged in water, and distributed food and health kits to those in need.
As a result of the typhoon, some employees and students at JRU were affected. Ms. Ivory Joy Malinao, the Marketing and Communications Office director, suggested a donation drive to Ms. Hiromi Lascano, the director of the Student Development Office and Community Development Office. In response, Ms. Lascano immediately called for donations. The Taos Pusong Rizal community heeded tremendously, contributing essential items. Additionally, JRU individuals donated items such as bottled water, powdered milk, 3-in-1 coffee, canned goods, noodles, and biscuits. A survey titled “Survey: Victims of Super Typhoon Carina” was shared within the JRU community to identify those greatly affected. The survey received responses from 153 individuals, including 121 JRU employees and 32 students, excluding security, housekeeping, canteen, and bookstore personnel. During the first week of August, these individuals were able to claim a JRU eco bag for groceries. When the super typhoon intensified, the Taos Pusong Rizal community was unleashed.
