Forty-three young boys received free circumcision services when the faculty of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences
together with the Nursing Society, and volunteers from the Level 4 nursing students, the Community Development Office, and alumni conducted the annual circumcision program with the theme, “Summer Time is Tuli Time”. This is a collaborative project with the Doctors of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital (OLLH) under the Surgery Department. Recipients of this outreach program were young boys aged 9 -14 years old from the three adopted barangays in Mandaluyong City such as Brgy. Daang Bakal, Harapin ang Bukas and Plainview. The ultimate goal of this program is to provide free and safe circumcision services to young boys; to promote a positive attitude toward hygienic practices and to strengthen community partnerships toward healthcare and preventive treatments.
Several stations were strategically positioned to ensure a smooth flow of the program. The nursing students and alumni supervised by the faculty were actively involved in providing pre-and post-operative care, including giving health education to ensure that the boys were comfortable and assisted well during their surgical experience. Some students and alumni
were assigned in the sterilization area, registration and medication dispensing area. The magnitude of dedication within the nursing department while executing this project echoed their commitment toward enhancing their service to the community and JRU’s desire to contribute to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3, pertaining to the health and well-being of its partner communities.
The faculty of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences cannot overemphasize their gratitude to the doctors of OLLH who took time out of their busy schedule to assist with this
endeavor. The alumni of Jose Rizal University, whose contributions through volunteer work have also been instrumental in the success of this program.
