September 9, 2016 (Friday) –Who is Hermano Puli? This was the main question asked by many high school students. To answer this, The MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS OFFICE conducted an academic forum. MCO invited T-Rex entertainment, a film production outfit that produced a movie entitled “Ang Hapis at Hinagpis ni HERMANO PULI”, starring Aljur Abrenica and Louisse delo Reyes, directed by Gil Portes; and DAKILA – a group of Rresearchers who provided keynote speakers for this event.
Upon the approval of DepEd Superintendent Nerissa Lozaria and endorsement of Mr. Cezar Nachor, DepEd,supervisor, Araling Panlipunan, Hermano Puli was attended by Grade 10 students from the following schools: Bonifacio Javier, Isaac Lopez Integrated School, Highway Hills Integrated School, City of Mandaluyong Science High School, Eulogio Rodriguez Integrated School, and Jose Fabella Integrated School. JRU students of Philippine Revolution, History 23, and other History majors joined the forum.
The participants were welcomed by Miss Ivory Joy Malinao, Director of Marketing and Communication Office. Miss Cha Roque, Education Director of Dakila, in her opening remarks, connected heroism on one’s academic performance, love (with many “hugot” lines), work, and industry. A 10 minute trailer of the movie Hermano Puli was previewed followed by a lengthy talk of Jay Erick Ramos, Historian. The discussion focused on how Apolinario dela Cruz started the Cofradia in Lukban, Quezon, the flight of its members, and the suppression of Hermano Puli. Mr. Ramos connected Puli’s revolt to the liberal ideas of Fr. Pedro Pelaez who later on became the mentor of Jose Burgos…and the rest is history.Film director Gil Portes narrated to the audience how the film was made. Mr. Aljur Abrenica, Hermano Puli himself graced the occasion during the panel discussion. Mr. Abrenica lamented on the difficulties and challenges they encountered during the filming of Hermano Puli. After the discourse, the entire team of Dakila and T-Rex Entertainment visited JRU President, Dr. Vincent K. Fabella for a courtesy call. A quiz bee competition for the grade 10 students followed after the forum. Later, the Rizalian Ambassadors gave them a campus tour.
The Academic Forum was hosted by Miss Christine Santos and Czarina Pabago. MCO was assisted by the Rizalian Ambassadors, Mr. Eduardo Dada, former Dean of Student Development Office gave his closing remarks.
