Paniamogan, Pontejos lifts JRU over Mapua in season opener
Despite squandering a twenty-point cushion late in the second quarter, the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers still managed to pull off a 83-72 win over the Mapua Cardinals in their Season 89 opener at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Philip Paniamogan waxed hot from beyond the arc, making seven triples in the game, four of which came in their pivotal fourth quarter comeback. The Cagayan de Oro native finished the game with 24 points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Paniamogan did not single-handedly carry the cudgels as rookie Paolo Pontejos, a transferee from San Beda also scattered 18 points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals as the Heavy Bombers buried Mapua in the last quarter.
It was JRU basketball right at the tipoff with JRU eventually leading by twenty, 41-21 at the 4:04 mark of the second period off a basket from Jordan Dela Paz. The Cardinals managed to trim down their deficit to just ten at the half.
In the third period, turnovers got the best of the Heavy Bombers as Kenneth Ighalo, Jessie Saitanan and Mark Brana took turns in scoring. With JRU leading 56-44 at the 3:22 mark, the Cardinals went on to close the quarter with an 18-4 run that gave the Mapua quintet a two-point edge at the half. Ighalo fired away three triples in that run.
“We had so many turnovers in the third. Nung fourth quarter, nandun na yung composure. Nagsisimula palang ang liga.” Said fourth year head coach Vergel Meneses.
Trailing by one, 63-64 in the early goings of the fourth, the Heavy Bombers ignited a 20-4 Paniomogan-led run, giving JRU a comfortable 81-68 lead with three minutes left in play.
His two fresh ward Pontejos and Paniamogan combined for 42 or half of his team’s output.
“Si Philip [Paniamogan] at Paolo [Pontejos], they’re shooters. kahit sumablay, shooters padin sila. Ayoko lang ng forced shots.” Added Meneses.
Mapua head coach Atoy Co on losing his first assignment said “My team is young. We totaly lost composure dahil mga bata pa sila. Pag pinasok mo sa loob, nawawala na lahat ng pinagaralan.”
“Execution palang namin is 20 percent. We barely break their press. Sa scouting alam na namin na full court press ang JRU. Gumawa na kami ng plays for that pero hindi nagagawa. Hindi din gumana ang team defense namin.”
Graduating guard Kenneth Ighalo finished the game with 22 markers on a losing case with three other Cardinals scoring in double figures.
